What is a Primary Source?

In the scientific discipline primary literature is original research.  Primary sources are based on facts.  They follow the scientific method with a section for methodology, results, and a conclusion.

Examples of primary literature are:

  • Scholarly journals
  • Conference proceedings
  • Technical reports
  • Theses and dissertations

 

      
     

    What is a Secondary Source?

    Secondary literature evaluates information from different primary sources.  Secondary sources give a comprehensive overview of a topic.  Secondary sources are a good place to start researching a topic, because it leads you to key primary literature.

     

    Examples of secondary literature:

    • Annual Reviews
    • Treatises
    • Handbooks
    • Manuals
    • Field books
    • Subject encyclopedias
