3D Printing Policy

Who can use the 3D Printer at Whitaker Library? 

Chowan University students, faculty, and staff who demonstrate knowledge or prior experience with equipment or have completed Whitaker Library’s 3D printing training. 

3D printing is not available to the public. 

Conditions of Use

  • The 3D printers may only be used with the following filaments: PLA, PLA+, and PETG. 
  • The library staff reserve the right to change the print queue as needed. Priority may be given to class assignments.     
  • Whitaker Library reserves the right to photograph all 3D objects printed. Images may be used for monitoring, marketing, and reporting outcomes. 
  • Maximum print size is 250mm x 210mm x210mm. Recommended maximum print time is 12 hours.
  • Whitaker Library is not responsible for failed models. It is the user’s responsibility to operate the equipment and monitor the print jobs. 
  • The user is expected to configure appropriate print settings using slicing software provided by Whitaker Library, including but not limited to: 
  • Plating and orientation of the model Type of filament 
  • Quality and speed of print 
  • Infill, layer heights, and perimeters 
  • Supports, brims, or rafts (as needed) 
  • Whitaker Library reserves the right to refuse any 3D print request. 

What items are not allowed to be 3D printed? 

No one is permitted to use the 3D printer to create items that are:

  • In violation of Chowan University polices.
  • Prohibited by local, state, or federal law. 
  • Weapons, parts of weapons, or any items that can endanger others. 
  • Smoking and drug paraphernalia. 
  • Obscene, pornographic, or otherwise inappropriate for the University environment. 
  • In violation of another’s intellectual property rights as covered by copyright, patent, and/or trademark protections. 
  • Mass produced i.e., large number print jobs of identical objects and/or intended for resale. 

Branding 

Any object with Chowan University branding must be approved by the branding committee. Marketing And Brand Management Submissions 

How much does it cost to 3D print? 

To use library supplied filament the price of 3D printing is $0.15/ gram with a $1.50 minimum charge and a $10.00 maximum charge. The product will be weighed with supports to determine the price. 

If you bring your own filament the price is $2.00 per print. 

When can I use the 3D printer? 

Approved users may schedule an appointment between 9 AM-4 PM Monday through Thursday, 9 AM- 2 PM Friday except on Chowan University holidays. To schedule an appointment, fill out the 3D Print Request Form. 

How to pick up? 

Users will be notified by email when the 3D print job is complete and ready for pickup. Payment is due at time of pick up.
