Who can I check books and other items out to?
- Students - may check out/borrow materials during any semester in which they have registered for classes. Students must have their Chowan University ID which will serve as their library card. All circulating items are checked out to students for a period of four weeks, with the exception that all items are due back by the end of each semester. All items may be renewed.
- Faculty and administrative staff - may check out items regardless of whether or not classes are in session. For faculty and staff, their Chowan University ID will serve as their library card. Items checked out to this group are due back at the end of the current semester. For example, items checked out to faculty in February will be due back at the end of the spring semester that May. Retired faculty may be issued library cards upon request and will also fall under this group.
- Contract staff - are issued library cards upon request and may check out items at any time during their employment with the Cafeteria, Housekeeping or Bookstore. Items checked out to this group are due back after a period of four weeks.
- Members of the Friends of Whitaker Library - organization are issued library cards upon joining the group. They may check out items at any time during their membership. Items for this group are due back after a period of four weeks.
- Cooperating Colleges – Chowan has agreements with East Carolina University and Shaw University to allow our students to borrow their materials using a Chowan ID and their students to borrow our materials by showing their ECU or Shaw ID. Please get a librarian to enter these students into our library system.
- Individuals outside of these five groups who otherwise have a connection to Chowan may be issued a library card. Examples include Chowan Trustees, local ministers, members of the Board of Visitors, and cooperating teachers. Generally, items for all other groups will be due back after a period of four weeks.
