Library Student Worker

In the event that a telephone is ringing and staff members are away from their desk or busy with a customer, please pick up the telephone and answer using the following guidelines.

  • Whitaker Library, this is (Your Name), how may I help you?
  • (Person's name) is away from her/his desk. May I take a message or is there something I can do to assist you?
  • (Person's name) is not in his/her office at the moment but he/she is in the building. May I take a message?
  • (Person's name) is out of the office today. Is there something I can help you with?
  • Learn how to transfer a call or place someone on hold.  If you are helping someone at the public services desk and the phone rings, ask if you may put the caller on hold. 
  • NEVER give out the personal information of any student or staff member over the phone. For example, who has what books checked out.
