Can children and minors use the library?

Children and the Chowan University Library: Effective:  November 12, 2007, and Reviewed and approved by Library Committee 11-2-11

The Library is oriented toward the students, faculty and staff at Chowan University, along with adult members of the local area. We cannot guarantee the safety or protection of unescorted children in the building.

All children under the age of 17 must be accompanied by an adult while in the Library. Unescorted children will be required to rejoin their parent/s. If a parent or guardian cannot be located, the University's Department of Safety and Security will be contacted. When appropriate, exceptions may be made at the discretion of library personnel.

Access to, or use of, the Internet by minor children is solely the responsibility of the parent or legal guardian. Unlike many public libraries, computer users at the CU Library do not access the Internet through a filter. While some local city and county policies may require public libraries to provide filtered Internet access to minors, CU libraries do not use filtering software.

All users of the Whitaker Library computer labs are expected to follow the CU Computer Use Policy.

If you see someone acting in violation of the library’s rules of conduct while you are working politely remind them of this rule.  If the behavior continues notify the librarian on duty!
